this is not the first time
The topic of reparations is once again in the news. This is not the first time we paid out reparations. There have been numerous reasons for paying reparations in America. Among those were to the interned Japanese and to the Native Americans.
California is possibly paying reparations to black Americans that would cost the state $650 billion. A task force is considering the best way to come up with an amount to give the descendants of slavery in California. They believe the racial wealth gap measures the effects between white supremacy and slavery. The current national average between a black and a white persons wealth gap is $360.000. $360,000 is the gap between a black persons net worth and a white. California will need $650 billion to pay that amount to all eligible blacks and California’s annual total budget is less than $300 billion.
look who gets the short end of the stick
The Indian Claims Commission, created after ww2, was to pay Native Americans compensation for land seized by the U.S.. It was hard for the commission to put a value on land based on it’s religious value and productivity. Sadly, the amount they come up with was $1.3 billion, which gave each Indian $1,000. In 1978 the commission was dissolved. They sadly didn’t trust the Indians with their reparations and kept it in a trust. They said that they didn’t believe the Indians were “competent to receive such large amounts of money.”
Then came a different agreement in 1971. This was the largest. $962 million in land in Alaska. It was 44 million acres and all they had to do was relinquish their claims on the rest of the state. This was for the Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts. Of course, they didn’t get this. It was put in trust of corporations and then the beneficiaries were given stocks. The Native Americans always get the short end of the stick. If anyone in this country deserves reparations it is them. We stole everything from them.
placing a value on what people lose
Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps during WW2. In 1948, they received compensation for lost property. $37 million was paid to approximately 26,000 claimants. They were paid nothing for their lost freedom. In 1988, $1.6 billion was paid to 82,219 survivors of internment. They each received $20,000.
Congress acknowledged that the Japanese were victims of prejudice. The Japanese suffered physical and emotional damage. There were specific beginning and end dates of internment. More than half of the victims were alive to be paid the reparations. This is not the case for African Americans.
research into who meets the requirements
California has a committee to discuss the ins and outs of who gets reparations. A task force limited reparations to those black residents ancestors were living in the U.S. in the 19th century. Now there may be more requirements and a different time frame. There may be a return of beach front property, Bruce’s Beach. The property was taken in the 20th century.
A California man is demanding everyone get $350,000, businesses get $250,000 and 15-20 acres of land. A different person demanded everyone get $800,000.
‘We’re not asking, we’re telling you:’ Business owner demands black people receive $350,000 EACH in reparationshttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11540503/Activist-demands-600k-California-taxpayers-meeting-states-reparations-task-force.html
These people believe they are entitled to reparations.
Fennell posted a video on Instagram showing him at the hearings, with around 60 others, alongside the caption: ‘Witnessing history with the tribe.’https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11540503/Activist-demands-600k-California-taxpayers-meeting-states-reparations-task-force.html
how will they decide
How does one come up with an amount and who gets to enjoy that amount? It is of my opinion that this was all about votes for one. Anyone running and saying they are for reparations would be an almost guaranteed vote. Where do they come up with the figures? We know very few whites worth $350,000 in the area we come from.
Average homes sell for $125,000 in our area. Median income is between $40k and $60k. This will be an issue all across America and not just in California. Many cities are working on this idea.
Some claim that blacks were not the only race to be slaves in America. Some claim that Irish and German were also slaves. Supposedly this is not true because technically they were indentured servants. They worked years to become free, there is a difference.
Indentured servants were not paid wages but they were generally housed, clothed, and fed.
The rights to the individual’s labor could be bought and sold, but the servants themselves were not considered property and were free upon the end of their indenture (usually a period of five to seven years).https://cliveden.org/discover-cliveden/slavery-and-servitude/#:~:text=Indentured%20servants%20were%20not%20paid,of%20five%20to%20seven%20years).
Indentured servants were abused and needed permission for everything, like slaves. 2/3 of British settlers were indentured servants. Who decides who deserves and is entitled? Who qualifies? Taxpayers will be paying a fortune today for the deeds of yesterday.
